Will your guinea pig love the taste of a juicy apple? Yes, of course. However, due to sugar content they may only be given them in moderation.
Unfortunately, it is relatively easy for a guinea pig to eat too much apple which can lead to weight gain, diabetes, and digestive issues. If you have owned guinea pigs for a while, you may realize their digestive systems are very sensitive, so doing the research before you give them something is an important step.
What parts of an apple can they eat?
The only part of an apple that is a big no is the seeds. Similar to the reason humans should not eat the seeds either, the seeds contain cyanide, and if they eat too much of this, it can be quite dangerous for your guinea pig.
They can, in fact, eat the apple core, but that is assuming you remove all the seeds prior to giving it to them. Of course, accidents do happen, and you and you cannot always be completely sure, so it may be in your best interest to avoid giving them the apple core completely.
The apple skin or apple peels are also safe for your guinea pig to enjoy, and they have some health benefits because they contain some fiber.
Can they eat apples everyday?
Just like most foods, you do not want to give them too much. As a general rule, you should never be feeding your guinea pig a whole apple because that is just far too much for their small bodies. It is recommended that they eat about a quarter of an apple as one serving size. You may want to cut the apple into smaller chunks to make it easier for them to eat. Overall apples are a safe option as long as it is fed in moderation.
