Can Hamsters Eat Chicken?

Hamsters are omnivores, so YES! your hamsters can eat chicken. In the wild these little critters, they don’t eat chicken, therefore there are a lot of precautions to keep while feeding this protein-rich treat.

Chicken is the bird and immensely popular snack, high protein and low-fat content makes it one of the best sources of protein for people with some health issues in comparison to staple meats like ground beef. 100 grams of chicken breast contains:

Is chicken safe for hamsters?

Yes! chicken is completely safe for hamsters, but it is recommended to treat them just chicken breast, not wings, thighs, drumsticks because they have higher fat content, it is not unsafe but too much fat is not healthy for your little pet too.

Cooked or raw chicken?

The raw chicken could be drenched in bacteria, it can be contaminated with Salmonella and Campylobacter; but fortunately, you can get rid of it by roasting it a little bit. When the internal temperature of chicken reaches 164 degrees Fahrenheit, almost all the bacteria will die and thus would be safe for your hamsters.

While especially cooking for your pet, do cook the meat for a little longer, just to ensure that no harmful bacterias or chemicals are left on the chicken.

Furthermore, it is not recommended to keep the offer of your hammy nuggets or chicken wings, the coating might not be safe for them.

How much chicken is safe for hamsters?

Hamsters are tiny creates, so they can definitely not eat much. In the wild, they eat small worms and insects in name of meat, chicken is nowhere part of their diet there. But when in captivity, you can surely sever them, but do know it is not something that they need, it is something they are completely well off without it too.

You can feed your hamsters, very little portions not more than once a week. Overfeeding chicken can cause serious health hazards, so cut it into small pieces and serve no more than half a tablespoon to them.

Cautions to keep!

One very important thing to take into consideration is, never to feed the chicken your hamster that has been salted, has been marinated, or is coated with some sauces. Hamsters can only eat raw chicken.

Since in the wild, these little creatures do not eat chicken, so you need to introduce it to them slowly, let their digestive system adjust with the protein-rich snack, and with the time you can increase the serve.

Serving full-serve for the first time can cause diarrhea or other severe tummy-troubles, and you never want that to happen.

Also, never feed canned-chicken, it contains lots of preservatives, salt, and sugar which is anything but good for your little pet, so a big no for canned sugar.
